It's incredibly hard to find images to refer to, I have discovered.
Bill Watterson is the J.D. Salinger of the comics world... he has disappeared pretty well. And his people keep on top of the hosting of his material without permission very well.
This is the closest I could find, but even it isn't what I was thinking of:
I'll go through my books and show you what I mean the next time we do something.
[And his inspiration for these landscapes came from Krazy Kat's landscapes... which it's really easy to see if you ever read Krazy Kat]
