on foot...
Aug. 16th, 2008 11:24 amon wednesday, i walked in to work, mostly because i wanted to get a couple of shots off of the side of the restaurant currently known as cambridge common. a construction site next door has revealed a previous incarnation of the space, and its signage. since a building will soon rise to again mask the sign, i wanted to document its existence. i also shot a couple of other places which appealed to me, including the huge construction site for the new north entrance to harvard law school, and the constable view from the mostly secret dudley garden (it's the last shot, and arguably one of two which don't belong in this set).
these images all beg to be seen from the less-distracting, more honest perspective of black-and-white grayscale. and so they are.

could you say a little about my perspective, or, rather, how you perceive it?
i don't think i'm done with that sign. i like a couple of the images i made of it, but am not totally satisfied.
the tird is an image i've wanted to make for years, and i think i want to return to it again, too. the one thing which isn't as clear as i'd like for it to be is the grease stain on the wall from customers resting their heads on the wall.
i still have a set from wednesday to put up... .

Most people would walk past the shop, but you captured it, with the interesting shadows and, the old style awning and sign.
[Like your writing,] it really brings your audience into the moment, and not only transports them, but makes them feel at home in it.
Theres so many details and reflections and concepts in the third, but its not cluttered, its fascinating, and moving, and it has this ... at this moment feeling I can't word that pulls me in.
They also all speak of life... whether it be new or old, a past that continues into today, or a new rebirth brought into an older world [Harvard Law Construction]
I think that may be it; what unifies all of these, in my mind. It's an experience of time and experience. The sign on the building shows the past life of the building which still stands, next to a construction site bringing new things.
The barber shop reminds me of things which are simple and friendly, of small town caring, but its brought in the context of our modern society, and the other photos place it in its city environment.
The 4th has the iconical flag, a symbol of heritage and past and progression...
I think I expressed it. Maybe not. Could be me.
